Mercy San Juan hospital was opened for business in 1967. Metropolitan Anesthesia Consultants (MAC), Inc. came into existence in its current format in 1988 as a multi-specialty anesthesiology group composed entirely of physician anesthesiologists. At its founding, the group consisted of 12 MDs, many of whom were fellowship-trained in subspecialties including pain management, cardiac anesthesia, obstetrics, emergency medicine, and pediatric anesthesia.
At that time, the affiliated hospital operated as a 270-bed facility with a surgery center and two intensive care units. Since then, the hospital has experienced significant growth and evolution. It is now a 384-bed institution with five intensive care units, a comprehensive cardiac program, and designation as a Level II Trauma Center.
The hospital provides care across nearly all service lines, with the exception of transplantation and neonatal services, and is recognized as a center of excellence or special recognition in areas such as Neurosurgery, Critical Care, Orthopedics, and Robotic Surgery. In addition to services provided on the main campus, MAC, Inc. also delivers anesthesia care at multiple outpatient surgery centers
Over the years, MAC, Inc. has expanded to a total of 23 physician members, including both full-time and part-time anesthesiologists. The group remains entirely physician based, with many members holding fellowship training in cardiac anesthesia, critical care, pediatrics, and both acute and chronic pain management.
The group actively encourages ongoing professional development, including additional fellowship training, maintaining teaching and attending roles, and gaining experience at other campuses to broaden clinical skill sets. All members are expected to be well-versed in perioperative pain management and regional anesthesia techniques.
MAC, Inc. maintains a strong presence in hospital committees and governance and values its transparent, collaborative, and productive relationship with hospital administration. This commitment to clinical excellence, professional growth, and institutional partnership continues to define the group’s mission and collegial culture.
